BRITAIN'S most successful archer is heading to the 2020 Summer Paralympics later this month.
Paralympian John Stubbs, appointed MBE, who trains at Rhyl Leisure, has been confirmed as one of four archers heading to Tokyo in August.
Having already won Gold at Bejing 2008, and a silver medal eight years later in Rio de Janeiro, John is aiming high this year with his sights set on gold.
Mr Stubbs said: “To go to a Paralympic games at any age is no mean feat, but when you get to my age you might think it’s beyond what you’re able to do, but I’d like to prove that age is no barrier, especially in disability sport, you just have to put your mind to it.
“Training at Rhyl has definitely helped me get ready for the Paralympic games, it’s a great site and the staff are really helpful too. I’m really looking forward to getting back into competing after the covid-19 break, bringing back a medal of any description would be huge, but I’m aiming for gold.”
Jamie Groves, managing director of Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, said: “It’s a pleasure to have John train at Rhyl Leisure. Everyone in the team at Denbighshire Leisure is behind him and we are all looking forward to watching him progress in Tokyo later in the month.
"We are delighted that John has enjoyed training at Rhyl and we pride ourselves on the quality of the facilities available at our centres across the county. Despite the recent uncertainty, we have continued to invest in our facilities, and with state-of-the-art Technogym machines in our fitness suites we have something to offer everyone, whether you are looking to improve your general fitness, or training for the Olympics!
“On behalf of the whole company, I’d like to wish John and the whole of the British team competing in Tokyo, the very best of luck.”
