THE Plaid Cymru MP for Ynys Môn, Llinos Medi, has explained why she voted in support of a bill to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales today (November 29).
MPs voted 330 in favour, to 275 against, during the second reading of the bill in Parliament today – this does not mean the bill has become law, but it allows it to continue for further parliamentary scrutiny.
Labour’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill would make assisted dying legal for terminally ill adults who are expected to die within six months and have the mental capacity to make a choice about how they end their life.
The bill also requires that two independent doctors and a High Court judge are satisfied that the individual making the request is older than 18, terminally ill with six months or less to live, and fully mentally competent.
Voting took place at about 2.30pm today following roughly five hours’ debate in Parliament.

Ms Medi said: “By supporting the bill at the second reading, I will enable the bill to move onwards to the committee stage, report stage and finally a third reading, where further discussions and scrutiny can take place in greater depth.
“This is a subject that deserves careful consideration, and it is vital that we continue to explore all the ethical, medical, and personal implications before reaching any further conclusions.
“My own experience of watching my father through the final stages of his life gave me a deeper understanding of how important dignity and compassion are in our final moments.
“Assisted dying provides an option for individuals to take control – offering peace and dignity in a compassionate way.”
Ms Medi said she has been “moved by the heartfelt messages” from her constituents who shared their thoughts and experiences with her prior to today’s vote.
She added that her “door remains open”, saying: “These voices have weighed heavily on me and made the decision incredibly complex, but they have also guided me to act in a way I hope represents our community, with care and respect.”
Liz Saville Roberts, Ms Medi’s fellow Plaid Cymru MP who represents Dwyfor Meirionnydd in Parliament, also voted in favour of the bill.
