An Anglesey community-focused organisation has been recognised for its efforts in fostering life skills and confidence in young people.

CELS Character Education & Life Skills was founded in 2019 by Dylan Jones, who recently scooped the Silver Award in the Outstanding Impact in Education category at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Wales Awards 2024.

The award recognises Mr Jones and CELS in their 'significant contributions' to mental health and wellbeing in schools across North Wales.

The organisation was established in response to the 'increasing challenges' faced by children and young people, which became more pronounced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Jones, director of CELS, said: "The impact of Covid-19 on young people has created a greater demand for our services.

"Returning to school posed significant challenges for social interactions, but we've grown from there and adapted our programmes to meet these needs."

The awards ceremony took place at the Mercure Hotel in Cardiff and featured speakers including Frank Bruno MBE and Welsh rugby commentator Phil Steel, who shared their insights on mental wellbeing.

At the core of CELS' offerings is the Character Development Award.

The programme, which is delivered to school classes for two hours each week throughout the academic year, focuses on building life skills through 'engaging physical activities'.

This is complemented by shorter wellbeing programmes and staff training, all aimed at promoting mental health awareness and resilience among students and educators.

CELS is also planning to expand its focus on sleep health, addressing key issues highlighted in recent School Health Research Network (SHRN) reports, and is developing workshops related to life skills, including tax and HMRC education.

CELS instructor Elen Jones said: "Being part of CELS has been incredibly rewarding.

"Seeing first-hand the growth in confidence and resilience in each child is inspiring.

"This award reflects the hard work and commitment our team puts into making a difference."

The recent awards ceremony saw CELS and Mr Jones personally nominated alongside larger organisations, such as colleges and universities, making Mr Jones the only individual finalist.

Mr Jones said: "Receiving this award is a testament to our team's dedication to positively shaping young lives.

"It strengthens our resolve to keep delivering impactful programmes."

As CELS continues to expand its reach, the organisation is eager to form new partnerships with schools across North Wales.

Mr Jones said: "We invite schools to take advantage of a free taster session to experience the Character Development Award first-hand."
