A TURF-cutting ceremony was held for Gwynedd Council’s Tŷ Gwynedd development in Llanberis to celebrate the start of the construction of affordable homes.

In the next few months, the council will build its first houses for more than 30 years on the site to provide more high-quality houses for the people of Gwynedd.

The new homes are part of the council's Tŷ Gwynedd housing project, which aims to build 90 homes throughout the county.

In Llanberis, three houses will be built - two semi-detached houses with two bedrooms; and one detached house with three bedrooms.

The aim of the new houses is to meet the needs of people, especially those who find it difficult to buy or rent a home but may not qualify for social housing.

These houses will be built following specific principles; namely, that they are affordable, adaptable, and sustainable.

Additionally, the new homes will be built with a focus on energy efficiency, using green technologies and innovative designs to keep the houses warm and the energy bills low.

Gwynedd Council has committed itself to providing more than 1,000 affordable new homes in the county by 2027.

It is expected that the construction work will be completed by next summer, and the houses will be allocated through Tai Teg's Affordable Homes Register.

Cllr Craig ab Iago, Gwynedd Council’s housing and property cabinet member, said: “We are in the midst of a housing crisis, and it’s essential that we build more houses to address the acute shortage of affordable homes in our communities.

“Tŷ Gwynedd is one of the key projects within the housing action plan, and it’s a moment of great personal pride to see this vision beginning to take shape after years of thorough planning by council officers.

“I would like to thank everyone who joined us at the event to celebrate this significant milestone in Llanberis, especially the children of Ysgol Dolbadarn, who represent the future of our communities.

“It’s important to highlight that this is just one of a number of plans that the council is implementing to tackle the crisis.

“Other plans include providing grants and loans to help the people of Gwynedd to buy and renovate houses, buying property to rent to local people at an affordable rate and several plans to tackle homelessness in Gwynedd.

“All these projects are vital to ensure that we provide the basic human right of safe, affordable, and suitable homes for the people of the county.”
