An 84-year-old nurse from Anglesey is in the running for a social care award.

Daisy Richards, who works at Fairways Newydd Nursing and Dementia Care Home in Llanfairpwll, is believed to be the oldest registered nurse in the UK.

She qualified as a nurse in 1958 and has dedicated nearly five decades to the care sector.

Her commitment to the industry has earned her a nomination in the Outstanding Service Award category at this year's Wales Care Awards.

The awards ceremony, organised by Care Forum Wales will take place on Friday, October 18,l in Cardiff.

Ms Richards was nominated for the award by Rebekah Charles, the manager at the care home.

She said she was honoured to be recognised for her work but added: "First I have to say there are thousands of nurses in the same situation as me and doing this type of work.

"Every day I come to work, I enjoy my work, you have to."

Referring to her age, Ms Richards said: "It is true I am looking after people younger than me, and I enjoy it.

"Over the years nursing has evolved, it has to, but some things remain the same and that includes how we look after people in care homes.

"It is their home, and we are there to help them, and that means the care has to be excellent."

Ms Charles said everyone at the home was hoping Ms Richards would enjoy success at the ceremony.

She said: "She is one of the most humble ladies I have ever met in all my days.

"She is remarkable.

"She needs to absorb the nomination and all of this, and she needs to enjoy it."

Mario Kreft MBE, the chair of Care Forum Wales, said: "Our aim is to recognise the unstinting and often remarkable dedication of our unsung heroes and heroines on the front line of social across Wales.

"The care sector is full of wonderful people because it’s not just a job it’s a vocation – these are the people who really do have the X Factor.

"If you don’t recognise the people who do the caring you will never provide the standards that people need and never recognise the value of the people who need the care in society.

"We need to do all we can to raise the profile of the care sector workforce - they deserve to be lauded and applauded.

"It is a pleasure to honour the contribution of all the finalists."
