A MAN from Caernarfon who assaulted and strangled his “vulnerable” partner has been jailed.

Barry Jones, 44, of Cae Bold, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years’ imprisonment at Mold Crown Court today (September 25).

He had previously admitted charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation.

Prosecuting, David Mainstone told the court that Jones and his partner had been in a relationship for about one year, with her moving to North Wales having felt “lonely” and “isolated”.

In the summer of 2023, he hit her between her legs with a metal pole, leaving her unable to walk initially and bleeding for a number of weeks.

She continued to live with Jones as she had “nowhere else” to stay, but was then strangled by him in March of this year.

Jones accused her of being unfaithful, before punching her to the face, strangling her, dragging her into a hallway and hitting her a number of times, leaving her with cuts and bruises.

While Jones apologised for his behaviour the next day, he told her he did not want her to go outside because of the visible injuries he had caused her.

He then sent threatening messages to her before police were contacted.

Defending Jones, whose previous convictions include for assault, affray, battery, and threatening behaviour, Anna Price said he suffers from mental and physical health issues.

Jones has schizophrenia, she said, but was not taking his medication at the time of these offences.

She said Jones, who has a “supportive family”, is apologetic, and that his level of offending has reduced in the last few years.

Sentencing, Judge Rhys Rowlands told Jones: “It’s clear to me that you took advantage of her undoubted vulnerability.

“This woman plainly was, in my judgement, vulnerable. Both incidents were fairly sustained in nature, and resulted in a profound and ongoing effect.”

A restraining order, preventing Jones from contacting the victim, was made for 10 years, while he will also pay a statutory surcharge.
