A COMMUNITY group has been set up with the aim of purchasing the lease of a pub in Gwynedd which has been put on the market.

Brondanw Arms, in Llanfrothen, is available on a “long leasehold” basis, with a guide price of £110,000 plus VAT, via estate agents Fleurets.

Joy King, a resident of Llanfrothen, has been involved in forming Menter Y Ring, a group which is trying to raise enough funds to purchase the pub’s lease.

It is affectionately known as “Y Ring” because, according to Joy, “there would be rings on the wall of the pub where boats used to be tied up, when the sea used to come in to the village”.

In total, Joy said, the group needs to raise £200,000 by Wednesday (September 25).

She said: “The £200,000 will go towards purchasing the lease, the legal fees, and the many other fees that will occur. We, as a community, are extremely grateful for all and any support.

“All we need are pledges and promises. If we have them, we can use them as our ‘bargaining tool’. We don’t physically need the money until we know if we’ve been given the lease.

“I’ve lived in the village for 14 years. It’s the heart of the village. It’s known from John o’Groats to Lands’ End, so we don’t want to lose our heritage and our connection with the rest of the country.

“It’s more than just a pub; it’s a community.”

So far, Joy said, roughly £100,000 has been pledged, with a JustGiving page also accepting donations: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/brondanwarms.
