STEAM enthusiasts in North Wales were able to see a record-holding locomotive on the tracks today (September 18).

60007 Sir Nigel Gresley was spotted travelling along the North Wales mainline on its trip from Holyhead to Cardiff.

The steam locomotive was built to a design of Sir Nigel Gresley in 1937 at Doncaster Works for operation on the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

The locomotive holds the post-war speed record for steam locomotives on British railways.

It was withdrawn from service in 1966 and purchased for preservation the same year; it is one of six A4s to be preserved.

Today, it departed Holyhead at 9.10am, stopped at Bangor at 9.46am and Llandudno Junction at 10.11am, and passed through all other North Wales mainline stations enroute to Cardiff.

Jack Nelson took the above photo of it passing through Rhyl shortly before 11am today, and called it a “special moment”.

He said: “I went to the River Clwyd pathway, next to the Foryd Bridge, because there is a fantastic view of the railway bridge, the river and the local countryside.

“You can also get a full side view of every train that passes through.

“I also got there, saw a lot of spectators, and even had a very good conversation with a friendly and passionate locomotive fan.

“To everyone's delight (and punctually on time at 10.54am), Sir Nigel Gresley crossed the bridge and greeted us with the classic whistle.

“Then, we were spoiled with another highlight- the sound of the Rhyl Minature Railway's steam locomotives echoed around Marine Lake and the River Clwyd as the 'little trains' greeted the special visitor.

"Sir Nigel Gresley whistled back, and all the locomotives whistled as if they were talking to each other!

“I love that I and our community can witness special moments like this, and that it's close to our front door."

Rhyl photographer Jason Hurst also took the below photo of the locomotive approaching the Tyn-Y-Morfa level crossing.
