Farmers across the country are being urged to prioritise safety as figures show a rise in fatalities.

The data, revealed on September 3, was released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which covers the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and fishing.

In the report, two out of the 27 fatalities were identified as having occurred in Wales.

Alex Cormack, Lycetts Risk Management Services, said: "The number of fatalities serves as a stark reminder for anyone involved in agriculture that safety must always be a top priority."

Mr Cormack stated that how important rigorous safety protocols are in the sector, which may include regular training, strategic use of equipment and strict adherence to safety guidelines.

He also encouraged farmers to regularly conduct risk assessments to identify and alleviate potential hazards on their farms.

He said: "By taking these proactive steps, we can reduce the number of preventable incidents and protect the lives of both workers and the public in this essential industry."

The report also disclosed that over two-fifths (44 per cent) of fatalities nationwide involved individuals over 60.

Mr Cormack said: "Older farmers face unique challenges, such as reduced physical strength, slower reaction times and underlying health conditions, which can increase the risk of accidents."

He recommended that older farmers consider adopting newer technologies such as wearable safety devices and real-time hazard monitoring systems, to help reduce risks.

He said: "In addition to standard safety practices, they should consider taking more frequent breaks to help prevent fatigue and enlisting extra help when needed."

Mr Cormack also encouraged a supportive culture in the industry where older workers aren't afraid to ask for help, call for less demanding tasks, or enlist support when required.

He also highlighted the role of farm owners, colleagues and family members in recognising when older farmers may be struggling and helping them handle their workload effectively, which could be vital to safety in this sector.
