A MAN from Holyhead who caused his ex-partner to live “in constant fear” and feel “worthless” and “lonely” has been spared jail.

Jack Matheson Jones, 21, of Bryn Glas Close, was today (August 30) sentenced to a year’s imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, at Caernarfon Crown Court (sitting at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court).

He had previously admitted two counts each of assault by beating and criminal damage to property, and a further charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Prosecuting, William Griffin told the court that, from May 2020 to 2024, Jones had been in a relationship with Kelsey Doutch, with whom he also has a child.

But in May 2024, Ms Doutch’s mother reported concerns for her daughter, saying she had been “subjected to abuse and violence” by Jones.

In February 2022, while the couple were in Liverpool, Jones grabbed Ms Doutch’s phone and threw it on the floor after an argument had ensued between them.

Another argument, which took place in Ms Doutch’s car in September 2022, resulted in Jones punching and shattering the “media nav” screen inside her vehicle

The following February, Jones and Ms Doutch were sat in their lounge when he started shouting at her, following her upstairs and continuing to shout as he did so.

Ms Doutch, who was holding their baby in her arms all the while, had Jones press his forehead against hers, while he also bit her on her right cheek.

In January of this year, Ms Doutch recorded him (Jones knowing she was doing so) pushing her across the landing of her property, before he started pulling his own hair and hitting his own face, saying: “No-one will believe you.”

Jones, who had no previous convictions or cautions, was arrested on May 23, 2024; during his police interview, he said Ms Doutch had, in fact, been controlling him.

Ms Doutch said in a statement that she now feels “on edge” and unable to go out with only her daughter.

She added that struggles to sleep at night, and lives in “constant fear”.

Defending Jones, Simon Mintz said: “21 years (old) doesn’t really do justice to his level of immaturity.”

Mr Mintz said his client had “allowed himself gradually to be ruled by his temper” in what was his “first proper relationship”.

He added that Jones has a “good work record”.

Sentencing, Judge Timothy Petts told Jones: “You were violent and abusive towards her. All of this has had a significant emotional impact upon her.

“Drink does seem to be a theme in these offences, as is the fact that you’re very young and, frankly, very immature.

“You’ve got a lot of growing up to do. (But) I think there is a prospect of rehabilitation for you.”

Jones was handed 200 hours’ unpaid work, a 120-day period of monitored alcohol abstinence, a 35-day programme requirement, and rehabilitation activity requirements.

He will also pay £250 in compensation to his ex-partner, while a 10-year restraining order was issued to him, preventing him from contacting Ms Doutch in that time.

Judge Petts added to him: “Make sure, with the help of your family, who I’m pleased to see are here supporting you, that you don’t waste this opportunity.”
