A MAN has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to drink driving and driving whilst disqualified near Bangor.
David Ellis Jones, 61, from Egremont in Cumbria, appeared before court in Caernarfon on August 12 following an incident shortly before 4pm on the A55 near Bangor on July 22.
PC Daniel Edwards was on patrol when he noticed that a vehicle was being driven "erratically" on the A55 before it came off at Junction 10 heading towards Caernarfon.
He followed the vehicle and signalled for the driver to stop.
Jones failed the roadside breath test and was arrested and taken into custody where he provided a reading of 97 (the legal limit is 35).
It transpired that Jones was already disqualified from driving following a drink driving offence by Workington Magistrates' Court back in April.
He appeared before court on Monday where he was charged with drink driving, driving whilst disqualified and driving with no insurance.
Jones was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison (suspended for 18 months), 100 hours of unpaid work (which must be completed within 12 months), a further disqualification from driving for five years, and was ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
PC Daniel Edwards of the North Wales Police Roads Crime Unit said: “Jones was well over the legal limit to be driving.
"His ability to concentrate and his reaction times would have been severely impeded and his actions put the lives of other road users at risk.
“We are committed to making the roads safer and have a robust strategy around enforcing the ‘Fatal 5’ offences which includes drink and drug driving.
"Any amount of drink and drugs can impair your vision and dramatically reduce your reaction times.
"It only takes a second to lose control of your vehicle but the consequences can last a lifetime.
"Don’t risk it, stay safe and have none while driving on the road."
