WREXHAM registered a second successive draw against a Premier League side on their tour to North America after finishing 2-2 with Chelsea at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

With co-chairman Rob McElhenney in attendance, Phil Parkinson's side trailed at the break but then turned things around as Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott put the Reds ahead in the second half at the home of NFL franchise, the San Francisco 49ers.

However, Chelsea - playing their first match under new manager Enzo Maresca following his switch from Leicester City - scored a late equaliser as an entertaining friendly ended all-square.

Wrexham lost 5-0 to the Blues in front of 50,000 supporters in Chapel Hill 12 months ago but the Reds, who kicked off this year's trip over the pond by drawing 1-1 with AFC Bournemouth in Santa Barbara on Saturday, gave a fantastic account of themselves in the second encounter and were so close to securing victory.

Wrexham, preparing for the new League One campaign, now head to Canada for the first time to face Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on Saturday.

Playmaker Elliot Lee, who missed the stalemate with Bournemouth after sustaining a thigh injury in the opening friendly at Hanley, was named in Wrexham's starting XI after making a full recovery.

Tom O'Connor got his first run-out in pre-season in a centre-back role while James McClean wore the captain's armband again and was named in attack alongside Ollie Palmer.

Although summer signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who followed Maresca from Leicester to Stamford Bridge, was not in the Chelsea squad and Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caicedo weren't involved, Marc Guiu, Tyrique George and Tosin Adarabioyo were handed debuts from the start.

Just two minutes had gone when they was a flare-up between McClean and Levi Colwill who got to grips with each other but it was quickly broken up.

Chelsea had the first chance when Reece James' free-kick hit the outside of the post and, as expected, the top-flight side continued to see a lot of the ball.

James sent in a corner which was nodded on by Christopher Nkunku and just needed a touch from a team-mate with the ball falling narrowly wide while Adarabioyo was unable to hit the target with his header.

There was another Blues opportunity when Benoît Badiashile failed to connect properly with a ball into the box and his effort was blocked but Wrexham came even closer in the 29th minute.

George Dobson picked out the lively Sebastian Revan who fed McClean and the Irishman's powerful drive parried by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez.

However, Chelsea took a 1-0 lead on 35 minutes.

A corner was cleared to George whose shot rom outside the area rebounded off Colwill to Nkunku and he fired home.

It remained 1-0 at the break and Chelsea made 10 changes for the start of the second half, with Will Boyle replacing O'Connor in Wrexham's defence.

Arthur Okonkwo made a good save with his feet to deny Raheem Sterling and keep Wrexham in the game when the action resumed, and the Reds' equalised in the 58th minute.

Following a neat counter-attack after Dobson won  possession, Revan's low cross was missed by Palmer and Bolton slotted home at the far post.

Parkinson made more changes following the leveller and Wrexham went 2-1 up in the 71st minute.

Marriott won the ball and then took a return pass from Sam Dalby before finding the net with a superb finish.

With Wrexham continuing to cause more problems, Marriott brought a good save out of keeper Lucas Bergstrom from Dalby's pass after good work by Ryan Barnett.

Chelsea equalised with eight minutes remained when Armando Broja laid off to Lesley Ugochukwu who slotted home, but the Reds can be proud of their efforts after holding the Premier League outfit.
