Sonay Kartal feels she has found her rhythm after another strong Wimbledon Qualifying showing to punch her ticket to the third and final round of the draw.

On Thursday, just one match lies between her and a spot in the Wimbledon main draw, which would be her third consecutive year at the Grand Slam.

The 22-year-old Brighton hard-hitter fought past top 200 player Sijia Wei in a three-set-thriller in Roehampton, bolting home in the final set to win 6-4 4-6 6-1.

Kartal secured her third title of the season in May and will put everything on the line to complete a dream week on the grass when she faces Erika Andreeva, the older sister of French Open semi-finalist Mirra.

She said: “You’ve just got to put those previous two sets aside and enter the third set as if it’s a completely brand new match.

“You want to reset and try your best to find the level for the last 45 minutes of the match.

“I feel good, I’ve played a lot of tennis recently, the game style is coming together, not today, it wasn’t quite going how I wanted it to but I take a lot of positives from today.

“It’s a great win for me even when I’m feeling like I’m not playing my best tennis at all, for myself mentally to find different ways to win, it gives me a lot of confidence going into the third round.”

“I’ve been lucky enough the past two years to be a wild card for the main draw.

“Those two years were probably the best two years and those weeks were the best weeks of my life, it’s been my highlight of each year.”

Kartal is on the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme presented by Lexus, the highest level of support for developing players aged 16-24, designed to help them crack the Top 100.

Following a lengthy spell off court to focus on her health earlier this year, Kartal is back to her best on the grass and knows exactly where she wants to be heading into next week.

She said: “It’s one final push and I know what’s on the other side and I’m going to do everything I can to recover.

“I didn’t think at the start of the year I would be here so I’m super grateful that I’m healthy and I’m just taking each match as it comes and enjoying myself on the court.

“Every tournament, this whole grass-court season, you’re playing everyone that deserves a spot to be there, everyone is really high ranked and playing great tennis.

“Wild card or qualifier, you’ve proved your level is there.”
