Students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor raised more than £1,000 for charity by organising and taking on a sponsored walk in a tribute to their lecturer.

The students, who are studying sports at the Welsh college, managed to raise £1,369 for Cancer Research Wales through their efforts.

This is in memory of their lecturer Rhodri Scott, who sadly passed away in March this year.

The young sports enthusiasts walked more than 16 miles along the coastal path from Pwllheli to Porth Neigwl, near Abersoch.

The students also set up a donation page on JustGiving which continues to honour Mr Scott and raise funds for his cause.

Speaking about the event, the students said: "We as a sports crew at college are doing a sponsored walk in memory of our very kind, caring, and special teacher, Rhodri Scott.

"Rhodri lost the battle after a few months of fighting cancer.

"We as a college were heartbroken to hear the awful news.

"He was an amazing teacher and he never failed to put a smile on anyone's face, even on the bad days.

"We are raising money in his name for the Cancer Research Charity, therefore, all donations count."

Sports lecturer and friend, Mr Gwyn Parry Jones supported the students' efforts and praised their initiative.

Mr Jones said: "Rhodri was a very kind and caring person and was loved by staff and students alike.

"He was a family man as well as a keen sports person, recently enjoying his golf and fishing.

"We have done the walk for a couple of years, but I think the fact that we were doing it in memory of Rhodri made the students more motivated, and everyone played their part in organising it."
