A SCHOOL in Anglesey will close this year, after the school predicted that just five pupils or less would attend the next academic year.

Ysgol Gymuned Carreglefn, near Amlwch, will close this summer, after Isle of Anglesey County Council's executive voted unanimously to shut the school.

The school has predicted just five or less pupils would be attending next term, with the setting already costing the local authority £17,200 per child - the highest among primary schools in Wales.

The council said that pupils would be moved to nearby Ysgol Llanfechell for the start of the next year.

Anglesey’s director of education, skills and young people, Marc Berw Hughes, said: “We can confirm that the decision to close Ysgol Carreglefn was taken, with a heavy heart, yesterday.

“We would like to thank everyone associated with the school and the wider community for the respectful manner they approached this difficult process. Our efforts to retain the school building for community use will continue.

“With only nine pupils, Carreglefn currently has the highest cost per pupil (£17,200) in all Wales primary schools, which is three times higher than the average cost per pupil for the rest of Anglesey.

"The school’s own forecast predicted five or less pupils attending from September 2024 onwards.

“Ysgol Carreglefn will close its doors in August 2024, with pupils transferring to Ysgol Llanfechell in September 2024.”
