OVER EIGHT-HUNDRED runners are expected to take part in the new Wrexham 10k event taking place this weekend.
The race, organised by Adrenaline Sporting Events, is set to unfold on Sunday, April 21, starting and finishing in the city centre.
Runners of all abilities have been invited to take part, with 22 trophies up for grabs on the day.
Each finisher will collect a unique Welsh-themed medal at the finish line on Queen Square.
The race will start at 9am on Queen Square, where runners will head down Ruabon Road towards Rhostyllen.
There they will turn left onto Hafod Road and complete a circular loop surrounding Erddig, before heading back towards the city centre and the finish line.
JCB is the title sponsor of the event, and there are hopes that the race will become a 'big event' for the area which will boost the local economy.
Organisers have now confirmed that the amount of competitors taking part is closing in on the 1,000 mark, with people set to come from all over the UK to take part.
Event organiser, Alan Lewis of Adrenaline Sporting Events said: "Preparations are looking good and we are expecting over 800 runners to arrive in Wrexham from all over the UK.
"The weather is looking good and we are looking forward to it. Mickey Thomas will start the race and everybody will receive a special Welsh Dragon Themed medal kindly sponsored by JCB.
"The local community are encouraged to come and support the event."
Several road closures will be in place during the course of the race to allow for runner and spectator safety.
This will effect Ruabon Road, Hafod Road, Sontley Road and Fairy Road between 8.50am and 10.30am on the day of the event.
Organisers say the race is expected to last 90 minutes.
