Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to feature on BBC's Countryfile

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the UK's longest and highest canal, situated in Trevor near Llangollen in North Wales.

Presenters of BBC's popular show 'Countryfile' Matt Baker and Charlotte Smith will be heading to the famous world heritage site in an upcoming episode of Countyfile. 

Built in 1795, the attraction is one of 26 cast iron aqueducts in the UK and part of the country's vast canal and river network.

For the first time in two decades, the canal is being drained as part of a major project by the Canal and River Trust.

Matt an Charlotte are on hand to see what it takes to maintain this massive landmark.

In the show which will air on March 3, Charlotte will be learning about the history of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct while helping the team to start the mega engineering process of draining the canal.

She will then join the repair team to see how they fix the thousands of iron railings spanning the aqueduct. Matt will also help to repair part of a nearby canal bank before discovering the species that call it home.

Also int he episode, Joe Crowley will investigate claims that cuts in government funding could threaten the future of Britain's historic waterways, putting some canals at risk of closure.

And with spring just round the corner, Adam welcomes new life onto the farm.
