A PROMISING young gymnast from Rhyl has received more financial support from a community group in the town which is sponsoring her.
Macaya Alsop, 13, has been sponsored by Rhyl Wings Projects, a community group which has already raised thousands, since 2023.
She was the group’s first sponsor, having already won a North Wales regional award and competed at the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics British Espoir Championships in Liverpool.

Rhyl Wings Projects has now pledged a further £300 to put towards helping her achieve her dream of competing at the Olympics.
Gloria Lambert, who helps run Rhyl Wings Projects, “She’s got to a level that nobody at her age really gets to, so we want to financially support her.
“Anything she might need – help with fuel, accommodation (for competitions) - we’ve said we’ll do.
“I used to do gymnastics, and was a coach a few years ago, so I know that for her to be at the level she’s at now – basically a stage down from Olympics – is just amazing.
“She’s just amazing, too, so she deserves the sort of support to get her up there. Hopefully, one day, we’ll see her at the Olympics.”
Macaya began her gymnastics journey in Rhyl and Prestatyn Gymnastics Club, but after it closed its doors, moved to Bangor Gymnastics Club, where she started training in the elite development squad.
She has previously also been selected for the Welsh squad.
Her mum, Mandy, added her gratitude for this latest show of support from Rhyl Wings Projects, who have previous bought Macaya leotards and gym equipment.
Mandy said: “This donation will now go towards equipment and any therapy she may need, which will greatly benefit her progress for her future in gymnastics.
“Macaya is working hard towards the British Championships in the near future, and is extremely thankful for the continued support she receives from Rhyl Wings Projects.”
Rhyl Wings Projects has also donated £150 to a variety of worthy causes, including St Kentigern Hospice, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s children’s ward, and The Salvation Army.
