RHIAN Davies, of Dyffryn Nantlle, is a support worker at Antur Waunfawr, and this month the social entreprise has launched a drive for more support workers.

Established in 1984 by R. Gwynn Davies in the Gwynedd village of Waunfawr, the company is offering “impressive terms” to those who would be interested in supporting individuals with learning disabilities in their workplace and at home.

As part of its recruitment drive, current staff members have shared their experiences of working for Antur Waunfawr.

Among those under the spotlight is Rhian.

She said: “Years ago, I was at somewhat of a loose end, and a friend of mine had contacts at Antur Waunfawr.

“I didn’t have the experience in the field, but I thought, ‘I might as well try and face a challenge,’ and I’ve genuinely enjoyed every shift since.

“It’s an extremely rewarding job. Nothing feels better than knowing you’ve made someone’s day. That you’ve been there for someone when they needed a chat.

“It doesn’t feel like work when I come here.”

In terms of what Rhian feels are good qualities in a care and support worker, she said: “You need to be an empathetic, kind, and patient person for this job.

“You need to have something inside of you that wants to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

“It’s so much more than work. We’re friends. If anybody is considering it as a career, give it a go. It’s been a precious opportunity for me personally.”

Antur Waunfawr is currently looking to recruit more support workers to provide more adults with learning difficulties opportunities.
