A DOLPHIN was driven to safety in dramatic fashion on Anglesey yesterday (December 21), after being stranded on Pentraeth Beach.

The Moelfre Coastguard, Penmon Coastguard and medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue received reports that a dolphin had died at Pentraeth Beach.

But when they arrived at the scene, the dolphin was still alive, but had been stranded high up on the beach for a few hours.

After a medical assessment, she was found to be in good shape despite her difficult circumstances, and a re-floating plan was devised.

As the tide was still going out, a re-float at Pentraeth was impossible, so those helping the dolphin felt the best option was to transfer her via road to Moelfre, where they would attempt to set her free.

This proved successful, and the dolphin soon took to the water with ease again.

A Moelfre Coastguard spokesperson said: "With Penmon CRT and Moelfre CRT escorting the BDMLR vehicles to Moelfre, we were able to supervise the safe release of the dolphin into the bay.

"After a few minutes, she was able to swim into deeper water quite happily.

"A superb team effort from all those involved."
