FIVE Japanese schools’ students visited the city of Bangor this summer, leaving many “not wanting to go home”.

The 16-year-olds were in North Wales as part of a summer course that restarted this year following the Covid-19 pandemic, part of a collaboration between the schools and Institute of Japanese Studies at Bangor University.

During their stay, the pupils stayed with host families, and the five schools involved were: Hakodate Chubu High-School, Fuji High-School, Fukuoka Maizuru High-School, Fuji Girls’ High School and Ohta Sakuradai High School.

The students concluded their visit with a ceremony at St John’s Church in the city.

A spokesperson for the Trinity Foundation, which helps prepare promising Japanese young people for university study in an English-speaking environment, said: “Thanks to the kindness of the people of Bangor and the staff of the Institute of Japanese Studies they have had a very happy time and many did not want to go home.

“We hope some of them will come back to study at Bangor University.

“Our local host families kindly supported the students like they were an actual family member.”
