A MAN from North Wales on an emotional quest to discover his true identity is to feature on a BBC One show this evening (September 2).

"Searching For My Other Mam - Our Lives" will tell the story of Gerallt Wyn Jones, which deals with identity, adversity, race and rejection.

He was adopted from the Manchester area as a baby by a couple from North Wales and was raised in the slate mining village of Bethesda, Gwynedd.

Gerallt, who runs Black Dragon Self-Defence and Martial Arts, said he feels “more Welsh than most people”, because he has lived in Wales his whole life and speaks the language fluently.

But growing up as a black man in North Wales with two white parents, he has faced adversity based on the colour of his skin and feeling that he was different.

Gerallt was born to a white unwed mother and was given away when he was just a few weeks old.

He has faced discrimination his entire life – even his adoption papers, which discuss shame and embarrassment because of the colour of his skin.

Gerallt’s adoptive mother, Olwen Jones, and her husband were keen to adopt a baby who wasn’t being accepted by other families.

Now in her 80s, Olwen loves and supports her beloved adoptive son in his quest to uncover his past and discover his black heritage.

The fear of rejection has held him back for nearly 50 years.

But with the help of his daughter, adoptive mother and Jackie from the adoption service, Gerallt embarks on the search for his biological parents and the family he never knew.

The programme will show his journey to discover his true identity and the answers to all of his questions.

"Searching For My Other Mam - Our Lives" will be shown tonight (September 2) on BBC One at 7.30pm, and on BBC One Wales at 8.30pm.
