A BUS firm has had to make “challenging” decisions to cut some Anglesey services while work is being carried out on the Menai Suspension Bridge.

Arriva is no longer picking up or dropping off passengers in some remote, rural locations such as Penmon and Glan Yr Afon.

The Arriva Service 58 Bangor to Glan-Yr-Afon is currently only operating between between Bangor and Llangoed.

The changes, Arriva says, are “temporary” and have also affected services 4/X4, Bangor to Holyhead, X43, Talwrn to Bangor, 58 Bangor to Glan-Yr-Afon, 62, Bangor to Amlwch or Cemaes, and service 562, Llanfachraeth to Amlwch.

Buses are currently unable to operate along their normal service routes due to weight restrictions on the bridge.

Arriva says this is causing buses to take longer to do their usual routes.

It has meant that some service had been running late so time-saving route cuts had to be brought in.

An Arriva spokesperson explained: “The service change implemented at our Bangor site on July 24, 2022 is related to the weight restrictions on the Menai Suspension bridge.

“Unfortunately, these weight restrictions mean that we are unable to operate along our services’ normal routes.

“Instead buses are having to divert across the Britannia Bridge which is incurring a significant time penalty.

“Since the restrictions came in, our services have begun to operate significantly late and we have had to register changes to improve the punctuality of services with up to eight minutes being added to services in each direction.

“Before implementing these changes we worked with both Isle of Anglesey County Council and Transport for Wales to understand the impact of the changes and work through a variety of possible resolutions.

“This has been challenging given the constraints caused by the nature of the services, increased running time and resource available.

“We have also been unable to ascertain how long the diversion will be in place.

“Although not ideal we have had to implement a change which delivers the most reliable and sustainable service for the majority of customers using the service.”

On its website Arriva had posted: “Service 4/X4, Bangor to Holyhead. Timetable revised, overall journey time will be increased to aid with reliability.

“Service X43, Talwrn to Bangor. Timetable revised.

“Service 58, Bangor to Glan-Yr-Afon. All journeys to operate between Bangor and Llangoed only, overall journey time will be increased to aid with reliability. Except for one evening trip from Bangor (returns as 57).

“Service 62, Bangor to Amlwch or Cemaes. Timetable revised with service running every 45 minutes, overall journey time will be increased to aid with reliability. On Sundays service will no longer operate via Llansadwrn

“Service 562, Llanfachraeth to Amlwch. Timetable revised.”

It is not known when the services will be reinstated or when the bridge work will be completed.
