SOME of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Wales located  in Anglesey’s largest town could benefit if an ambitious” multi-million pound bid is accepted.

If successful £22.5m of investment, including £17m from the Levelling Up Fund could see £54m in benefits help Holyhead.

It’s all  part of a plan, which aims to spark regeneration and reverse decline in the town centre.

“Holyhead: A culture and heritage driven transformation” has been formally presented to the UK Government by Anglesey County Council.

It’s been a collaborative partnership with Anglesey County Council,  Holyhead Town Council, Môn CF, the Ucheldre Centre and the Church in Wales.

The bid calls for a package of projects to increase employment, improve the town centre  and visitor experience.

Amongst aims are increasing footfall and spending in the town, providing modern floor space to meet business needs and to give arts, culture and leisure a boost.

Community projects set to beenefit include the Empire play park, the development of a new Breakwater Park visitor centre and better beach facilities.

The project could also see the development of St Cybi’s Church,  on Stanley Street, to include a multi-use community hub and social enterprise cafe.

The purchase by Mon CF of five dilapidated buildings would help renovate the town centre, including the old HSBC building.

The Ucheldre Centre could see the development of its facilities, with a bigger dance studio,  catering for 60 dancers, and an extension to the arts facility, which could  attract up to 17,500 new users.

Anglesey Council Deputy Leader and Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones has welcomed the scheme.

“We are all quite excited by this package, which will make a visible difference quickly, bringing forward £22.5m of public and private investment that will deliver considerable benefits locally.,” he said.

“The package includes a big focus on the Town Centre with vacant properties tackled to bring them back in use,.

“It includes the  expansion of the Empire play centre, exciting developments at the Ucheldre centre and St Cybi’s Church and a development of a new visitor centre at the Breakwater Park with facilities on the beach front being improved. 

“We hope the package will increase the number of visitors, increase footfall and spending in the town, to create new permanent local jobs, apprenticeships and volunteering opportunities.  

“We needed to ensure that our bid was well thought out and took advantage of the opportunities from the Levelling Up Fund to make a real and lasting difference to local people’s lives and opportunities.

“If successful, it will act as a major step towards the revival of Holyhead, with benefits that spread across the whole Island.”
