A FIRE on an industrial estate near Caernarfon destroyed a 33-kilonewton (kN) transformer yesterday (July 18).

This was on the Griffiths Crossing Industrial Estate, by the former Ferodo site.

The blaze is believed to have been caused by a build-up of heat inside the transformer, as temperatures reached record highs in North Wales.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 5.30pm last night.

“We had three appliances and the foam carrier in attendance.

“The incident was under control by 10.32pm.

“It was a 33KN transformer, spread to a substation building.

“(There was) fire damage to the rear door and light smoke damage to the inside.

“The cause is believed to be building up of heat in the transformer.”

Firefighters were also called to a number of gorse fires in North Wales yesterday.

Shortly after 12.40pm, the service was called to an incident on Porthdafarch Road, Holyhead (below).
