A “FAMILY Fun Day” is to be held in Gwynedd next weekend to raise donations in aid of those currently suffering in Ukraine.

Angela Williams, along with her daughters Nicola and Jenn, have organised the event, which will take place at Talysarn Community Centre on Saturday, March 26 between 12-4pm.

A tombola, a jumble sale and a raffle are just some of the attractions at this free event, with all donations going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Having held a similar event following the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in December 2004, Angela said she hopes to at least double the amount raised this time for a worthy cause.

Angela said: “It’s turned into more of a ‘fun day’ than a jumble sale. We’ve got entertainment, stalls, raffles, a tombola, and we’re just out to make as much money as we can for Ukraine.

“We’ve also got an auction coming up on April 5 with (auctioneers) Rogers Jones & Co of Colwyn Bay. (also for the same DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal).

“We did this sort of thing many moons ago when the tsunami hit, and we made £550, so we’d definitely like to at least double that, but I think we’re on track to make a bit than that, hopefully.”

While Angela has no ties to the country of Ukraine herself, she said you have only “got to be human” to feel affected by the devastation caused since the Russian invasion began last month.

She described the scenes as “heart-breaking”, while also adding her gratitude for the generosity shown by businesses in her area who have supported her and her daughters’ fundraiser.

She added: “It was almost instantaneous, seeing the photos on the TV. They were heart-breaking. You’ve got to be human (to feel affected by it), and that’s it.

“Nicola and I stood in tears discussing it, and we said: ‘Well, we’ve done it before; let’s do a jumble sale'; that’s where it came from. The local businesses have been extremely generous.”

To donate items for the fundraiser event, drop-off points can be found at Byw Bywyd in Dinas; Yr Orsaf in Penygroes, and The Original Factory Shop in Caernarfon are taking small donations.
