A TENNIS club volunteer from the Isle of Anglesey has been nominated for Tennis Wales’ Volunteer of the Year 2022.
In 2021, Benllech resident Graham Harker-Roberts replenished two derelict tennis courts in the village, bringing them back into community use.
Mr Harker-Roberts also aided in developing a programme which has allowed more than 100 children to take up the sport since the courts’ transformation.
The two tennis courts once made up Benllech Sports Club, but now form Benllech Tennis Club.
The clubs outreach has grown rapidly, with the new courts having encouraged more than 80 people from Benllech and the surrounding areas to become members.
Mr Harker-Roberts’ nominator for the award and colleague John Whitehall (who has also been nominated for an award), said: ““This is a true testament to show that anybody can make a difference in their local community, inspire more people to invest in their local community, and make a real difference.
“This nomination is a true testament to Graham’s commitment and hard work.
“He is an inspiration and has driven facility developments as well as increasing participation.”
Through developing a close link to local schools and the Benllech town hall, Mr Harker-Roberts has ensured that the community could play tennis regardless of the weather.
The nominee has worked hand in hand with Mr Whitehall in delivering opportunities to Benllech residents, and has helped secure Benllech’s place on the map of tennis in Wales
Mr Whitehall, who runs First Advantage Tennis in Colwyn Bay, added: “Benllech has never had tennis activity before and with the support of First Advantage Tennis and the local sports development team Graham has done an incredible job at making tennis accessible to all the local community.”
Simon Johnson, CEO of Tennis Wales, said: “The Tennis Wales awards were created to recognise people just like Graham, who have had an incredibly positive impact not only on their local area but the opening up of tennis across the whole of Wales.
“We’re really looking forward to announcing all winners at the Awards on 5th March and showcasing the incredible tennis talent we have here in Wales, from volunteers to players and coaches.
“If you’re not able to attend the awards ceremony, be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter page for live results on the night.”
The annual Tennis Wales Awards will be held on the Saturday, 5 March, where multiple awards will be awarded for achievements in tennis.
