ISLE of Anglesey County Council are recruiting people to act as tour guides, in an effort to help further develop the cruise ship industry in North Wales.

The Council are looking for those passionate about Anglesey to work as official tour guides in welcoming cruise ship passengers to the island.

Willing residents would be provided with a fully funded training programme, with a foundation in guiding.

The project is being funded by the UK Government via the UK Community Renewal Fund.

Anglesey Council’s Visitor Economy and Coastal Areas Manager, Gwenllian Owen, said: “The cruise ship industry provides Anglesey and North Wales with significant economic benefits.

“There are around 44 cruise ship visits planned for the port of Holyhead during 2022 with some passengers staying locally and others visiting different part of Anglesey and North Wales.

“This generates around £5million to the North Wales economy annually.

“The project provides an important platform to further develop tourism on Anglesey.

“It will give individuals the opportunity to become official tour guides and share their enthusiasm and love for the Island.”

The Council’s Economic Development and Major Projects Portfolio Holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to enhance the visitor experience to our beautiful Island.

“Our aim is to recruit local residents that are passionate about their community and Anglesey.

“This project will benefit residents, businesses and tourists alike.

“We are confident that it will encourage visitors to stay on the Island for longer and spend more money in our local businesses.”

The training programme has been designed to be flexible around individuals’ personal circumstances and will be made available during afternoons and evenings.

Residents will be given the choice to complete the programme in-person, online, in practical walking sessions or expert lectures.

Ms Owen added: “We are seeking individuals that are passionate about Anglesey and have a positive and friendly personality – if this is you, we encourage you to apply for your place on the project.”
