A new affordable housing development in Bethesda has gained the attention of many prospective buyers.

More than 50 people attended a virtual live information event to confirm and register their housing need for new homes on the site of the former railway station.

The site is being converted into 17 new homes by housing association Grŵp Cynefin, who are in partnership with Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government on the construction of the £2.5million project.

The new name for the development is Llety’r Adar.

The social let housing development is conveniently close to public transport, recreational fields and the Lon Las Ogwen cycle route, and includes eight two-bedroom properties, five two-bedroom bungalows, three three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroom home.

Steffan Smith, Grŵp Cynefin’s Housing Team Leader, said: “We had great information sessions at Bethesda Rugby Club, which is near the site of Bethesda’s former railway station, Llety’r Adar development.

“Our sessions were full, with over 50 people attending both on site and on-line, to confirm their interest and to speak to Gwynedd’s Housing Options Team to ensure they were on the housing list register.

“I feel very fortunate to be working in a role that actually supports people. There is no better feeling than being able to house people, who have specific needs, and help them to find a quality and stable home in the right location, that you know, will change their lives for the better.”

Grŵp Cynefin owns and manages more than 4,800 properties across all six North Wales counties, as well as northern Powys.

Innovation and Growth Director at Grŵp Cynefin, Mel Evans, said: “Providing affordable and accessible homes, particularly in rural communities, is at the core of our work and we are proud of our work here in Bethesda.

“There is a real need for housing families and couples within this community, so this development will support those looking to remain living in the area who may have struggled to find affordable housing in the past.”

Councillor Craig ab Iago, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Ensuring quality homes that are affordable for the people of our communities is a priority for us at Gwynedd Council, and we are pleased to be able to work with partners on this development in Bethesda.

“It is clear from the uptake of the recent sessions that there is great interest in these new homes and I look forward to seeing local residents moving in soon.”

The homes, built to meet the Welsh Government low carbon standards, ensures all properties built under the scheme meet modern methods of construction and sustainability.

North Wales’ Gareth Morris Construction of Llangollen and his team are the appointed builders.

Bethesda’s former railway station, which shut in 1963, as well as the old Bethesda Athletic FC and Bethesda RFC clubhouses, formerly sat on the site and have now been moved to other locations with re-investment.
