IN THEIR first year with a men’s team since the club reformed in 2015, Holyhead-based Ynys Môn Celts Basketball Club are just one win away from a final.
On Sunday, February 13, they welcome Aberystwyth Warriors to Holyhead Leisure Centre (2pm tip-off) for a crunch fixture.
Competing in the Basketball Wales National League (BWNL), where some of the best Welsh basketball talents ply their trade, the Celts are in the semi-finals of the BWNL Plate Competition, with a win against Aber all that stands between them and a place in the finals, taking place at Wrexham Glyndwr University on April 2.
Supporters are encouraged to make their way to Holyhead Leisure Centre on Sunday to support the Celts, and club chairperson Jody McEachern said the Celts took pride in being able to promote the island on a national stage.
Jody said: “We’re very excited to be appearing in the semi-finals of Wales’ first-ever national league.
“It is great for the Celts to be in this position in our first season of having a men’s team since reforming the club six years ago.
“To be able to promote Ynys Môn on a national level throughout the season is something that has been very exciting for us, and we’re delighted that the performances of the team have inspired our junior players to want to pursue basketball when they grow up.
“We’re looking forward to a great game against Aberystwyth in the semi-finals and hope the island will get behind us as we go for the win.”
Entry to watch the game at Holyhead Leisure Centre is free, with capacity for a small number of supporters inside the main hall to attend the game and cheer the Celts on as they go for a big win against tough opposition.
