REFURBISHMENTS to the three towers of the Britannia Bridge across the Menai Strait will cause the bridge to be at least partially closed for some of November and December.
The work will see the installation of support beams underneath the stone lintels at the top of each tower.
Before the work can be carried out, scaffolding needs to be installed on the sides of the towers so that a working platform can be put in place above the highway.
For the scaffolding to be installed safely and disruption kept to a minimum, one lane of the A55 will be closed between 7pm and 5am while the work takes place.
There will be traffic lights in place, as well as a temporary speed restriction of 40mph on the bridge.
Some of the work will require the bridge to be closed during the night for up to 20 minutes at a time from 7pm-5am on the following dates:
• November 25 – 27
• December 6 – 10
• December 13 – 15
Due to the nature of the work, the flow of traffic needs to be controlled during the installation of the scaffolding decks for safety reasons and protecting access to the three towers.
These temporary closures will be controlled by two-way traffic lights at either side of the bridge.
The installation of the scaffolding with 20-minute closures is expected to be completed by the end of January 2022.
Though, this could change if the weather impacts on the programme of work – it is not permitted to take place during high winds, so the programme is greatly weather-dependant.
Wind speeds will be monitored regularly, and work will be stopped if there is any risk.
The scaffolding is also being built up the sides of the towers from the rail deck level to help minimise disruption to traffic on the road.
Updates will be provided to the public via the Traffic Wales website (www.traffic.wales) and Twitter channels.
