NIGHTCLUBS in Bangor have worked with police to provide extra security checks following the growing issue of spiking.
North Wales Police (NWP)’s Gwynedd North team have, along with Bangor clubs Academi and Cube, reviewed procedures and safety measures to ensure everyone is as safe as possible during their night out.
Figures released on Wednesday revealed 198 reports of drink-spiking and 56 incidents of spiking by injection were recorded in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in September and October.
On Wednesday evening, thousands of people boycotted nightclubs for a ‘girls' night in’ protest following the rise in reports of spiking.
A post on NWP Gwynedd North’s Facebook page on Wednesday read: “We have recently been working with local nightclubs Academi and Cube, and local authority licensing to review procedures and safety measures to ensure anyone on a night out is as safe as possible.
“When entering nightclubs, please expect to be subject to security checks upon entry, which may include the use of a 'wand' to detect, knives, needles and other dangerous instruments.
“Licensed premises will display ‘Ask Angela’ posters around the venues and all staff are fully trained should anyone ‘ask for Angela’ to intimate that they require help, and staff will assist them.
“Wherever possible, please drink from a bottle using a Stop Top as a preventative measure against spiking.
“We are pleased to say that reports to police of 'spiking' are rare in our local night time community, but our local policing team take all reports seriously and will thoroughly investigate any instances of this nature.”
