Plans for an 18 metre mast to improve 5G phone coverage have been submitted in a Gwynedd village.
Hutchison UK Ltd (Hutchison UK Ltd) has applied for permission to build the 60 foot structure at Nant Y Glyn on the A4086 that flows through Llanrug.
According to the applicants, if approved, the mast would “enhance 5G coverage levels and network capacity” within Llanrug and the nearby area.
The supporting statement accompanying the application notes that Ysgol Gynradd Llanrug, sited less than 200 metres away, was consulted with prior to the application being submitted.
“Three are in the process of building out the UK’s fastest 5G network,” said the applicants.
“Three has 140MHz of 5G spectrum (and 100MHz of it contiguous), which means our service will be much faster and able to handle more data.
To bring this new technology to the people H3G will need to provide a mix of upgrades to existing sites and the building of new sites.
“New sites will be needed for many reasons, including that the higher radio frequencies used for 5G do not travel as far as those frequencies currently in use and that sometimes not all existing sites can be upgraded.
“In this area there is an acute need for a new mast to deliver the above.”
The statement goes on to note that the height of the pole has been kept down to the “absolute minimum capable of providing the required essential new 5G coverage.”
“This equipment is considered unlikely to have any material impact on the local area but significant connectivity improvements which is a material consideration in the judgement of the site’s suitability,” it concludes.
It’s expected that Gwynedd Council’s planning department will consider the application over the coming weeks.
