THE largest collection of paintings by Sir Kyffin Williams is to go on
sale at a London auctioneers.
The 65 paintings are estimated to fetch between £135,000 and £200,000
when they go on sale at fine art auctioneers Bonhams of New Bond St, on
Wednesday April 28. Sir Kyffin was a renowned Welsh landscape painter
who lived at Llanfairpwll on Anglesey.
A spokesperson for Bonhams said Sir Kyffin is regarded: “As the supreme
painter of the Welsh landscape in the 20th century. His evocative works,
the oil paint applied in thick, bold strokes, have become synonymous
with the countryside of Wales. He was also a highly talented watercolour
painter and portraitist.”
The collection of his work, 62 watercolours on paper and three oil
paintings, was assembled over many years by a longstanding personal
friend of Sir Kyffin.
The spokesperson added: “This collection covers a wide range of subjects
including many depictions of the Welsh landscape, as well as the
wildlife, farmers and rural scenes, which were so central to Kyffin
Williams's work.
“They include: The Lost Sheep, among several studies of shepherds and
farmers often with loyal sheepdogs in tow; Clouds over Snowdon, one of
nine depictions of Snowdon, each sensitively portraying the landmark
from a number of viewpoints and Cottages Waunfawr which depicts homes
nestled into the hillside.
“Among the portraits in the collection are a self portrait and a
portrait of Hugh Dick, a farmer friend.”
