GWYNEDD and Anglesey have some of the cleanest air in Wales, according to a new study.

New research conducted by holidaycottages.co.uk reveals the areas in Wales with the cleanest air and lowest air pollution rates

It found that Wrexham was the fourth best region in Wales for its air pollution rate.

Two other counties in North Wales were placed in the top five, with Gwynedd being found to have the cleanest air with an average ranking of 6.1µg.

This may not come as a surprise, as Gwynedd is home to the popular Snowdonia National Park, with natural wonders Mount Snowdon, Llyn Tegid, and Cadair Idris all found in the county.

Popular tourist destination Anglesey was placed third, with Pembrokeshire and Newport completing the top five.

According to the IQ Air report which was used to conduct the study, Wales has an overall average air pollution rating of 8.9µg, which meets the World Health Organisation’s optimum target of less than10µg.

84% of Brits say they are considering a staycation this year, and with air pollution having a noticeable impact on peoples health, it's a great factor to consider when planning your trip.

The top five regions in Wales with the best air pollution rates, in units of µg are:

  1. Gwynedd (6.1)
  2. Pembrokeshire (6.4)
  3. Anglesey (7.3)
  4. Wrexham (8)
  5. Newport (9.7)

From this top five, it’s important to note that each area successfully meets the WHO target of having an air pollution rating of less than 10µg.

In fact, of all the towns, villages and cities that were analysed in Wales, 60% were ranked as below 10µg and a further 30% were deemed ‘good’ – that’s 90% of Welsh towns and cities overall being marked as within target or good.

The study has no data for Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire or Powys.

Commenting on the findings, Shannon Keary, Digital PR Manager at holidaycottages.co.uk, says: “Air pollution and a greener environment continues to be a huge talking point for many people in the UK and in this campaign, we wanted to reveal where has the best air pollution. It’s really promising to see that so many Welsh towns, cities and villages have such clean air. It’s especially great to see that an incredible 60% of Wales has low air pollution rankings that are within the WHO target, with a further 30% qualified as ‘good’.

“We have also created an interactive tool that allows people to find out the areas in their region with the cleanest air in an easily digestible format and then they can compare it with that of their friends and family across Wales and the UK.”
