FOUR short demonstrations calling for support for climate crisis legislation in Parliament are planned for Beaumaris, Menai Bridge, Bangor and Caernarfon.
The demonstrations have been organised by the Menai Climate Group for next Friday, and will be Covid compliant, which means they will be limited to four people and a banner.
Helen McGreary, a volunteer with the group, said: “The demonstrations are to raise awareness of the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill (CEE Bill). It is also to show people who live on Anglesey and in Gwynedd really do care about the government taking action to tackle climate change, and to reverse the loss of wildlife habitats.”
Another volunteer, Abi Beath, said: “Anglesey is vulnerable to rising sea levels. This Bill would provide real action on carbon emissions and wildlife protection which is what we need to leave a habitable planet to our children.”
This week marks the date the CEE Bill was due its second reading in the House of Commons. Caroline Lucas MP presented the Bill in Parliament in September 2020 and it was scheduled for debate in the House of Commons on Friday March 26, but the pandemic has slowed its progress through Parliament due to the sheer volume of private members’ bills lined up.
The CEE Bill is supported by more than 100 MPs from eight political parties, including Labour, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Liberal Democrats and Greens. The Bill calls on the Government to take account of the UK's entire carbon footprint, to protect nature in the UK and to prevent ecological damage along supply chains. It would also establish a citizens’ assembly to ensure these changes are achieved in a fair and just way.
