AS CASES continue to rise on Anglesey, a Holyhead GP has spoken out.

Isle of Anglesey County Council said their Test, Trace, Protect team recorded more than 100 new positive Coronavirus cases in Holyhead from March 1 until March 17. This resulted in more than 450 people being forced to self-isolate.

Latest data reports that Holyhead has a Coronavirus incidence rate of 503.9 per 100,000 people. In comparison, Wales’ national incidence rate is 43.3 per 100,000 people.

The number of individuals testing positive for Coronavirus on Anglesey has also increased to 11.9 per cent. This is the highest percentage of positive tests throughout Wales (the national average is 3.9 per cent).

In a video, released by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Dr David Williams, from Victoria Surgery in Holyhead, says: "In the 33 years I have worked here, there has never been anything like this and we are so close to the end. Through your hard work and self-isolation, social distancing and now the vaccination programme. We are very close to coming to the end of the pandemic.

"Unfortunately, in the past 10 days or so, there has been a surge of cases in the Holyhead area.

"It is very unfortunate at this point that this should happen. Continue to come for your vaccines if you are invited, and that has been working very very well and the figures are extremely good and I believe there is going to be, on top of the surgeries, Penrhos Stanley clinic coming up by the end of the month.

"The second and more important thing is that we all follow the guidance. Hand-washing, face coverings and social distancing and also avoiding mixing in households unless it our own actual household. Irrespective of what is to come in the next few weeks, relaxation rules.

"At the moment, unfortunately here, on Holy island, and the West end of Anglesey, we have got an outbreak and we have to be more careful, all of us, and that is including us as medical professionals but also all of you.

"So carry on, you are doing a fantastic job, but we just need to unfortunately grit our teeth for a few more weeks until we get through this and be extra careful."

A spokesperson for BCUHB tweeted: "Anglesey currently has the second highest incidence rate in Wales with a rise in cases in the Holyhead area.

"There have been over 100 positives tests in the town since March 1."
