Anglesey Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, has backed calls for the UK Government to take action to protect the future of Welsh ports.
The Welsh Government’s Minister for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates, has written to the UK Government urging action to resolve the EU Exit’s ‘disproportionate impact’ on Welsh ports, including the port of Holyhead.
Mr Skates has asked UK Government how it plans to reverse the reduction in use of Welsh ports and compensate communities impacted by its chosen policies.
Cllr Medi said: “Freight levels between Wales and Republic of Ireland have dropped significantly, and this is having a really negative impact on Holyhead. Hauliers are clearly avoiding the land bridge which is so vital to the port of Holyhead, and crossings to Dublin are down since the EU Exit became a reality.”
“I welcome and support yesterday’s letter from the Minister, Ken Skates, to the UK Government.
"Our priority has always been the safe and efficient trade and traffic movement through the Port of Holyhead, whilst protecting our local communities.”
She added: “We will continue to work in partnership with Welsh Government to protect Holyhead’s position as one of the main international gateway. It is evident that a collective public sector effort with effective interventions is required to protect all Welsh ports as well as the local communities and jobs they help sustain.”
Anglesey Council will continue its regular dialogue with Welsh Government, port authority and other key partners to assess any further developments relating to the port of Holyhead.
