OPENING hours at two Anglesey recycling centres will be cut from June.
Anglesey Council will reduce operating hours at its Household Waste Recycling Centres in Penhesgyn and Gwalchmai, where residents can safely dispose of waste and large items, from Monday, June 1.
Gwalchmai will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays while Penhesgyn will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but both will remain open from 10am to 5pm on weekends, when the council said most people use the sites.
Cllr J Arwel Roberts, waste management portfolio holder, said: “It is unfortunate that the council is experiencing budget cuts and important that we continue to deliver the best possible service within the available budget.
“The reduced opening times are regrettable, but there is always an HWRC open during the week and both available at the weekends when residents use them the most. I would like to thank Anglesey residents for their understanding and support.”
Anglesey Council was forced to make £4 million in spending cuts for the 2015/16 financial year after its annual budget was slashed by 3.9 per cent by the Welsh Government.
A council spokesperson said: “The hours are being reduced as part of a number of service cuts the council has approved to save money.
“We have reviewed usage data and it made sense to close the sites when they were least busy, but ensure there is always a site open on the island during the week.”
