Prestatyn march on in Europe after penalty showdown triumph

PRESTATYN Town booked a place in the second qualifying round of the Europa League after a brilliant penalty shooutout victory against SK Liepajas Metalurgs.

After evening the tie to take the match into extra time, they showed immense cool to win 4-3 in the penalty shootout and book their place againt HNK Rijeka of Croatia.

After both sides saw chances pass them by in the opening exchanges, the deadlock was broken when Metalurgs attacker Afanasjevs coolly slotted a finish beyond Dave Roberts.

Town tried to get back into it, coming close through Davies twice, before hitting the woodwork with a Michael Parker header in stoppage time.

Town continued to attack after the break, and they were handed a lifeline when Zirnis was sent off for Metalurgs for a second yellow.

Their endeavour was finally rewarded on 77 minutes when Ross Stephens converted a Chris Davies ball.

They continued the onslaught after the restart, and on 91 minutes when Andy Parkinson found Neil Gibson, who prodded a low effort beyond Varaninskis, to force extra time.

The same pattern remained throughout the additional 30 minutes, but neither team was able to find the net and the match was taken into a penalty shootout.

Goalscorer Kalns missed SK's first penalty to hand Town the advantage, while Gibson, Stephens, Hessey and Parkinson desptched their penalties.

The match was won when Ikaunieks blasted his penalty over the bar, prompting wild celebrations among players and fans at the Daugava Stadium
